OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – A 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy received life-threatening injuries after being bitten by sharks in Oak Island Sunday evening.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center hospital officials said both are recovering in the hospital and are in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Officials said quick actions by bystanders and emergency crews were the keys to their survival.
The first shark bite was called in at 4:12 p.m. near the Ocean Crest Motel. Officials say the 12-year-old girl was about 20 yards from the shore in waist deep water when she was bit.
A 16-year-old male from Colorado Springs, CO, lost an arm after being bitten by a shark. Officials say he was also approximately 20 yards from the shore in waist deep water.
