It is that time of the year again, yes time to pick the winner of super bowl number 50,I been alive for 44 of them but we will not talk about those statistics.
Denver Broncos VS Carolina Panthers
Let us lay out some facts
Peyton Manning has declined and his arm is not what it used to be,Peyton has referred to tonight’s game as his final rodeo. This reminds me some of John Elways final super bowl run,so can Manning go out with his second super bowl title ?
the Broncos’ grind-it-out style gets the job done.
one play — a 30-yard rush by Anderson to set up the Broncos’ final field goal — ended up leading to the crucial points in a 20-18 win the AFC championship game.
Demaryius Thomas has struggled in recent weeks and will be needed to step up as the Broncos’ true No. 1 receiver.
Touchdowns, not field goals, will win this game.
Tight end Owen Daniels could again be a key factor in the red zone.
Josh Norman might be the best cornerback in football.
The Panthers averaged 142 rushing yards per game in the regular season and 148 yards in the playoffs. The two-headed attack of Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart has been a handful in short-yardage situations. The Broncos allowed the NFL’s fewest yards rushing per carry.
It’ll be a drastic change for the Broncos’ defense from what it saw two weeks ago with New England
Newton is all about vertical and big plays. Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey Brown aren’t elite receivers, but they have the speed to win deep if a defense doesn’t respect them and Newton is not afraid to thread the needle.
Special Teams will also be a factor in this game and maybe a big one
Ginn, Carolina’s punt returner, has seven career returns for TDs and a 10.3-yard season average, fifth best in the NFL among qualified returners. The Broncos have been great on punt coverage in the playoffs, thanks to gunners Kayvon Webster and Cody Latimer and punter Britton Colquitt. Kickers Brandon McManus and Graham Gano both have had solid years.
here are a couple more are’s of reality to consider.
the Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen who won two Super Bowls and oversaw one of the NFL’s most consistently competitive franchises, has given up control of the team months ago to continue his battle of Alzheimer’s disease,So you can bet that the Bronco’s will be not only playing for the ring but for their ill owner, their hall of fame QB who is playing his final game and if I may add will always be compared to Tom Brady so another ring would not hurt. The Broncos are playing for one more guy we have not mentioned, defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos Wade Phillips.
As a Bills fan I will include some history
In three seasons in Buffalo (1995-97) before he became head coach, Wade delivered solid returns as defensive coordinator. In 1996, Buffalo’s defense allowed a league-low 22 touchdown passes and 3.4 yards-per-carry, while ranking fourth in sacks (48) and second in yards-per-play (4.3) and opponent completion percentage (.520). As the defensive coordinator and head coach with the Bills, Wade guided the stellar careers of future Pro Football Hall of Famers Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas.
During the 1998-2000 seasons as head coach in Buffalo, the Bills compiled a regular season record of 29-19. Wade took the reigns after a disappointing 6-10 finish in 1997 and reversed the team’s fortunes by leading it to a 10-6 record and the playoffs in 1998. It was the most successful campaign of any first-year head coach in Bills history. His 1999 team led the NFL in total defense, went 11-5 and earned another trip to the postseason.
The only trace of a frown flickers when Laurie Phillips is asked about that playoff game. It was a January 2000 loss by his Buffalo Bills to Tennessee on a disputed final-seconds kickoff return, dubbed the Music City Miracle.
I bring this up because as a Bills fan I still wonder what would have been if then owner Ralph Wilson did not fire Wade.
would we have got back ? ironically that was the last time the Bills made it to the playoff and on a 16 year drought since the firing of Wade.
Wilson only fired Wade because Wade would not take orders and fire a coordinator with the team.
Wade Phillips I will be pulling for you tonight because I still think your one of the top coaches in the league.
The Panthers remind me of a young 1990 Bills team who came in having FUN and very cocky !
the Bills lost that super bowl to a defense that kept Buffalo out of the end zone. why do I mention that here ? because I see the same thing coming this evening in Sanfran.
I do not expect many points tonight, look for a low scoring game and a hard fought defensive battle between the Broncos and the Panthers.
Cam Newton will throw the pick 6 that cost them the game.
I say Broncos win a close one in Over time.
